Weakly bonded old snow requires caution. Wet avalanches during the day.

Distinct weak layers exist in the snowpack. Single winter sport participants can release avalanches in some places. These can release the weakly bonded old snow as well and reach medium size. The avalanche prone locations are rather rare but are barely recognisable, even to the trained eye. Backcountry touring calls for careful route selection.

Snowpack With the exception of the northern and the furthermost western parts of the Lower Valais, the snowpack is expansively metamorphosed (faceted) and loosely-packed over widespread areas. On the northern flank of the Alps these layers are frequently found in the uppermost part of the snow cover; in the southern Valais and in Grisons the entire snow cover in many places is expansively metamorphosed (faceted) and loose. In northern Grisons more than anywhere else, there is also surface hoar evident from place to place which, furthermore, has been blanketed by fresher layers. The frequency of avalanche prone locations has decreased over the last few days, however in the eastern regions more than anywhere else, dry-snow slab avalanches can still be triggered from place to place even by minimum additional loading, i.e. the weight of one sole person. As a consequence of solar radiation and daytime warming, wet-snow avalanches are possible on very steep south-facing slopes during the course of the day. Observed weather review Wednesday, 15.02.2023 Following a night of clear skies it was sunny and inordinately mild in the mountains during the daytime hours. Fresh snow - Temperature At midday at 2000 m, approximately +7 °C. Wind Winds were blowing at light to moderate strength from southerly directions. Weather forecast through Thursday, 16.02.2023 During the nocturnal hours and in the afternoon, high-altitude cloudbanks will pass through. Thus, the nighttime hours will have clear skies only to a limited extent. During the daytime hours it will be quite sunny. Fresh snow - Temperature Slightly less mild than in recent days; at midday at 2000 m approximately +2 °C; the zero-degree level will lie at approximately 2400 m. Wind Winds will be blowing predominantly at light strength, at moderate velocity at elevated altitudes in the western and the northern regions, from southwesterly directions. Outlook through Saturday, 18.02.2023 In the northern regions skies will be partly cloudy on both days, in the inneralpine and southern regions it is expected to be predominantly sunny. In northern regions above approximately 1800 m, a small amount of snowfall is anticipated. Winds will be blowing mostly at moderate strength, on Saturday at strong velocity in some regions at high altitudes in particular, from northwesterly directions. The zero-degree level will lie at approximately 2000 m. The danger of dry-snow avalanches will continue to diminish gradually. On sunny slopes, gliding avalanches are possible in isolated cases.
