Avalanche Activity

TO for 09.01. Localised windslab instabilities on steep lee slopes on NW through N to E aspects above 850m. Avalanche. Haz Moderate.

Forecast Snow Stability: At higher levels there will be some new unstable windslab developing. The greatest instability will be where these accumulations gain depth. Areas most affected will be very steep wind sheltered terrain on North-West through North to East aspects above 850 metres, especially coire rims and the tops of gullies. Some cornice growth on the same aspects. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Forecast Weather Influences: Variable generally strong West-South-Winds throughout the period veering Westerly later. There will be moderate showers these falling as sleet and snow at higher levels with more snow expected further inland. The freezing level will be around the 800 metre level, lowering slightly overnight then rising to 800 metres again later. Observed Weather Influences: Winds have been storm force South-South-Westerly with heavy showers of sleet and snow at summit levels. The freezing level was around 700 metres rising slightly in the afternoon. ObservedSnowStability: The snow has depleted at lower levels. Wind exposed terrain on Southern aspects is becoming scoured and bare in places. There are localised accumulations of windslab developing on wind sheltered terrain above 900 metres. These are mainly affecting coire rims and the tops of gullies on North-West to North-East aspects. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
