Regions

Lizard-Flathead, Akamina, Flathead, Lizard, Moyie.

Avalanche danger will increase as an intense storm, with lots of wind and snow, moves through.
Avoid avalanche terrain while the storm snow settles.

Confidence

Moderate

  • Uncertainty is due to the track & intensity of the incoming weather system.

Avalanche Summary

Numerous small, wet loose avalanches were reported on Monday and Tuesday.

Snowpack Summary

Around 10 cm of snow sits over a widespread melt–freeze crust that extends to approximately 2400 m in the alpine. Beneath this crust, the snow remains moist due to the recent warm and wet weather. Lower elevations are rain soaked and likely have a surface crust, where there is snow.

The mid-snowpack is generally well-settled and well-bonded, sitting above a thick melt-freeze crust that makes up most of the lower snowpack.

Snowpack depths at treeline range from 80 to 150 cm and thin rapidly at lower elevations.

Thursday
Mostly cloudy. Up to 5 cm of snow. 50 km/h southwest ridgetop wind. Treeline temperature -7 °C. Freezing level 1200 m.

Friday
Mix of sun and cloud. 10 to 15 cm of snow. 30 to 70 km/h southwest ridgetop wind. Treeline temperature -5 °C.

More details can be found in the Mountain Weather Forecast.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Avoid avalanche terrain during periods of heavy snowfall.
  • Avoid exposure to overhead avalanche terrain; avalanches may run surprisingly far.
  • Avoid lee and cross-loaded slopes in the alpine.

Problems

Storm Slabs

Storm Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer (a slab) of new snow that breaks within new snow or on the old snow surface. Storm-slabs typically last between a few hours and few days (following snowfall). Storm-slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
