Avalanche Summary

Numerous storm slab avalanches at all elevations were reported since the weekend. Up to size 2 and both naturally and explosive triggered,

If you go out in the backcountry, please consider sharing your observations on the Mountain Information Network (MIN).

Snowpack Summary

Northerly winds are currently redistributing around 30 to 50 cm of low-density snow at all elevations. This new snow has buried various pre-existing crusts, surface hoar, or old wind-affected surfaces.

The mid and lower snowpack is generally well settled with a series of variable crusts and facetted snow.

The average snow depth at treeline is approximately 70 to 150 cm.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Continue to make conservative terrain choices while the storm snow settles and stabilizes.
  • Avoid freshly wind loaded features, especially near ridge crests, roll-overs and in steep terrain.
  • Recent wind has varied in direction so watch for wind slabs on all aspects.

Problems

Storm Slabs

Storm Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer (a slab) of new snow that breaks within new snow or on the old snow surface. Storm-slabs typically last between a few hours and few days (following snowfall). Storm-slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
