Regions

Rossland, South Okanagan, Shuswap, North Okanagan.

Generally safe avalanche conditions, watch for unstable snow in isolated terrain features.

Small slabs may be lingering in sheltered terrain features, continually assess as you travel.

Confidence

Moderate

  • We are uncertain due to a highly variable snowpack.
  • We are uncertain due to a limited number of field observations.

Avalanche Summary

In the past week, reported avalanche activity has been small size 1 dry loose and storm slabs.

Snowpack Summary

Surface conditions are variable throughout the region with isolated wind affect, possible sun crust on steep solars and unconsolidated soft snow that is settling.

A widespread layer of surface hoar/facets and a crust is down roughly 20 to 25 cm depending on aspect and elevation.

Below this, the upper snowpack has several crusts and/or surface hoar layers depending on aspect and elevation.

The remainder of the snowpack is dense and well bonded, containing many more crusts.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Small avalanches can have serious consequences in extreme terrain. Carefully evaluate your line for slabs before you commit to it.
  • The best and safest riding will be on slopes that have soft snow without any slab properties.
  • Make observations and continually assess conditions as you travel.
  • Use caution above cliffs and terrain traps where even small avalanches may have severe consequences.
