Tomorrow will start at a chilly -10, but gradually warm up to about -2. Light cloud for most of the day, but expect some blue skies to shine through occasionally. Winds will light to moderate out of the northwest. No snow. All in all its shaping up to be a very nice day.

Snowpack Summary

This morning had a good solid refreeze which helped to lock everything in place. While air temps stayed below zero, the sun is starting to have some heat. Possibly enough to even form a sun crust on steep solar aspects by tomorrow morning. We haven't had any snow for a long time, and as such we've seen very little change to our snowpack as a whole. Windslabs are still widespread in most areas and remain our biggest avalanche problem. 

Terrain and Travel

  • Avoid exposure to steep, sun exposed slopes, especially when the solar radiation is strong.
  • Be careful with wind slabs, especially in steep, unsupported and/or convex terrain features.

Problems

Wind Slabs

Wind Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer of snow (a slab) formed by the wind. Wind typically transports snow from the upwind sides of terrain features and deposits snow on the downwind side. Wind slabs are often smooth and rounded and sometimes sound hollow, and can range from soft to hard. Wind slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
