Considerable avalanche danger will be encountered in some regions. Wind slabs and weakly bonded old snow require caution.
The more recent wind slabs are in some cases prone to triggering. They are to be evaluated with care and prudence in steep terrain. Avalanches are rather small. Careful route selection is recommended.
Snowpack In particular on the northern flank of the Alps, on Tuesday the sometimes strong southerly wind gave rise to snow drift accumulations that are prone to triggering. On the northern flank of the Alps from the Bernese Oberland into Liechtenstein, in northern and central Grisons and in Lower Engadine, the fresh snow and wind slab layers of recent days are lying on top of a weak old snowpack. Avalanches can be triggered in particular at the interface with the old snow and in some cases release the entire snowpack. In the other regions, older snow drift accumulations lying on top of faceted weak layers remain prone to triggering in some places. The bonding of the snowpack is most favourable in the extreme west of Lower Valais and in northern Lower Valais, where hardly any distinct weak layers exist. Outlook through Friday, 10.02.2023 With mostly clear skies at night, each of the coming days will be sunny. In the south, Wednesday night will be only partly clear. On Thursday it will remain cool; the wind will be light to moderate from easterly directions. On Friday, temperatures will rise a little. The avalanche danger will decrease slowly.
