Snowpack

The new snow that fell on Wednesday in the north and the large amounts of new snow from last weekend in the south have increasingly stabilised. Deep layers of the snowpack are compact in many places. However, around the crusts in the top part of the snowpack, weak layers with a sometimes faceted crystal structure, and in some cases also surface hoar, are deposited. These weak layers are still prone to triggering in places, especially in southern Upper Valais and in the inneralpine regions of Grisons.

Gliding avalanches are still possible, primarily on east-, south- and west-facing slopes below approximately 2400 m and more rarely on north-facing slopes. These may be large.

In the west, it will be quite sunny in the morning, becoming increasingly cloudy later on. Elsewhere, it will be cloudy at times. There will be some rainfall in the afternoon in the Prealps.

Trend until Sunday, 17.03.2024Saturday

Snow will fall in the north and in Valais during Friday night into Saturday. The snowfall level will drop from 1800 m to around 1500 m by the morning. In the east, light snowfall will continue during the day, while it will be increasingly sunny in the west and mostly sunny in the south. By Saturday evening, 5 to 15 cm of snow is expected on the northern flank of the Alps, in Lower Valais and in northern Grisons, with less snow anticipated elsewhere. There will be moderate to strong northwesterly winds at high altitudes. There will be hardly any change in the avalanche danger, although there will be mostly small wind slabs that are prone to triggering at high altitudes.

Occasional gliding avalanches, some of which could be large, will still be possible.

Sunday

After a mostly clear night, Sunday will initially be sunny. As the day progresses, clouds will gather from the west. There will still be a weak to moderate westerly wind. There will be hardly any change in the avalanche danger.
