Olympics
Avalanche danger
Highlights
Take care while approaching wind loaded slopes at mid and upper elevations. Feel for firmer wind transported snow and avoid open slopes steeper than 35 degrees where you may trigger a wind slab avalanche. There's no shortage of early-season conditions at lower elevations and on steep southerly aspects. Take your time while navigating exposed rocks, trees, and open creeks.
Avalanche Discussion
Fresh and shallow wind slabs likely formed on lee aspects near and above treeline. Test the bond of new snow to the stout Dec 8th crust before committing to steeper open slopes.
Small avalanches can be consequential if they rake you through exposed rocks, trees, or open creeks. Travel conditions in many areas have become challenging following a warm and wet first half of December. Below the stout December 8th crust, there are no layers of concern.
2020-21 Forecast Schedule: Avalanche danger ratings will be issued for the Olympics every Friday through Sunday and during mid-week holidays. During the week when the Hurricane Ridge road is closed, forecast information will be updated daily to include expected conditions and relevant travel advice under the No Rating label.
During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources. Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
