Avalanche problems

  • Wind slab

    • Above 1,600 m
  • Persistent weak layers

    • 1,200 m–1,600 m

Avalanche Activity

The wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in isolated cases.

The wind slabs are bonding only slowly with the old snowpack. These can be released, even by small loads in isolated cases. At high altitude and on wind-loaded slopes the likelihood of avalanches is higher.

Snowpack Structure

The sometimes avalanche-prone wind slabs of last week are poorly bonded with the old snowpack. Low and intermediate altitudes, sunny slopes: The snowpack is largely stable and its surface has a melt-freeze crust.
