Avalanche Activity

The avalanche prone locations are to be found especially on steep shady slopes above the tree line. Weak layers in the old snowpack necessitate caution and restraint.

In some regions in some localities up to 10 cm of snow will fall on Thursday. Avalanches can be released in near-ground layers by small loads. Remotely triggered and natural avalanches are possible. In addition the fresh and older wind slabs must be taken into account. The small quantity of fresh snow of Thursday and the wind slabs represent the main danger.

Snowpack Structure

The new snow of last week is lying on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack on shady slopes above the tree line. Towards its base, the snowpack is faceted and weak. Avalanches can be released in deeper layers very easily. In addition the large surface-area wind slabs adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls are capable of being triggered.
