Avalanche Activity

The danger remains significant, as drifts of wind-blown snow have formed in many places.

As a consequence of new snow and a sometimes storm force wind from northerly directions, wind slabs formed in the last few days in all aspects. They are bonding only slowly with the old snowpack. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular at the base of rock walls, and adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. Also transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack are especially precarious. Wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant. Apart from the danger of being buried, restraint should be exercised as well in view of the danger of avalanches sweeping people along and giving rise to falls.

Snowpack Structure

The snowpack will be subject to considerable local variations. The wind has extensively reshaped the snowpack, causing the recent surface snow to be blown away and creating extensive eroded areas interspersed with areas of accumulation; in many areas, there are hard, icy surface crusts, some of which are hidden. Weak layers exist in the snowpack in particular on shady slopes.
