Look for and avoid hard slabs of snow located on steep slopes below ridgetop and in cross-loaded gullies. You can trigger avalanches in these places. You might not get any warning signs, like cracking or audible collapses, before you trigger a slide. Northeast and east-facing slopes are the bullseye for hard drifts of snow sitting on weak, collapsible layers.
