The most likely place you may trigger an avalanche is in a firm area of drifted snow. The deepest drifts can be found above treeline on northeast and east-facing slopes. Pillowy or lens-shaped drifts just below ridgelines and in cross-loaded terrain features are often the places you may find stiffer snow that is more prone to avalanches.
