You can trigger an avalanche on steep slopes with wind-drifted snow. You can see clues like cornices and scalloped surfaces. You can feel the change to stiffer, brittle snow, and it may even crack as you move into drifted areas. Slides could be larger and run farther than you initially expect. Avoid traveling in or underneath avalanche terrain loaded with drifted snow. Your safer travel options are low-angle or wind-sheltered terrain.
