Avalanche Summary

You can  trigger an avalanche on upper-elevation slopes facing north, northeast, and east where weak early-season snow lingers beneath cohesive layers of drifted snow. Cracking and audible collapsing are signs of unstable snow. Retreat to more wind-sheltered terrain or less-steep slopes if you experience these warning signs. South-facing terrain or slopes less than about 35 degrees provide safer options.
