Avalanche Summary

You can trigger an avalanche on west through north-to-southeast-facing slopes at upper elevations. The most problematic areas are those with recently wind-drifted snow on steep slopes below ridgelines, on the sides of gullies, and on steep rollovers. You can identify drifted snow by its smooth, rounded appearance or by its hollow sound underfoot. Use extra caution when traveling above terrain traps or cliff bands where a small avalanche could have outsized consequences. Wind-sheltered slopes less than about 35 degrees offer travel riding options.
