TO for 07. 01. Windslab instabilities, cornices developing on NW through N to NE aspects above 750m. Avalanche Hazard Considerable.

Forecast Snow Stability: There will be drifting in the strong winds. This redistributed and fresh snow will build areas of unstable windslab, especially where it gains depth in steep locations , on North-West through North to East aspects above 750 metres. Cornices will develop on the same aspects. Wind exposed aspects will scour and the snowpack on these slopes will become firmer although some previous cross loading instabilities will linger. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: There will be strong West-South-West winds with heavy snow throughout the period. The freezing level will lower from 500 meters this evening to around 380 metres. Observed Weather Influences: There were generally strong-gale Southerly winds with moderate snow showers. At lower levels these showers were falling as rain. The freezing level was around 700m lowering. ObservedSnowStability: There has been some thawing at lower levels. Above 750 meters wind slab instabilities are beginning to develop on wind sheltered coire rims, gully tops and ridge flanks on West through North to Easterly aspects. Wind exposed slopes are showing some scouring. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
