Highlights

Small Wet Loose avalanches today on aspects that see significant sunshine at all elevations are possible.  If you feel the surface snow warming, observe roller balls or pinwheels, it's time to look for non-avalanche terrain, change to a shadier aspect.  Avoid traveling under steep sun-drenched slopes later in the day.

Today we will see even warmer temperatures than yesterday.  A sunny day will bring with it warm temperatures in the mid-'30s.   Small wet loose avalanches on aspects that see significant sunshine at all elevations are possible.  If you feel the surface snow warming, observe roller balls or pinwheels, it's time to look for non-avalanche terrain and move to a shadier aspect.  Avoid traveling under steep sun-drenched slopes later in the day.    If you see roller balls or pinwheels the surface snow is warming and the likelihood of triggering a wet loose avalanche has increased.

Avalanche Discussion

We have seen some warmer temperatures over the past 3-days. Avalanche conditions are generally safe this morning before we start seeing temperatures increasing in the afternoon.  As the temperatures increase, we will start to observe the snow surface decrease in stability.  Signs of unstable snow include sinking up to your boot tops in wet/slushy snow, mushy snow surface, rollerballs and/or pinwheels.  Use caution when traveling on sunny aspects on or under terrain <35 degrees.   Yesterday while traveling above treeline in the Southern Wallowas we observed roller balls and pinwheels on South aspects.
