Highlights

Loose wet avalanches will become easier to trigger as warmth slowly penetrates the snowpack again today. Travel may be challenging below 10,000’ on many aspects due to heavy, wet snow. While the avalanche danger will be Low, dense sluff debris can be dangerous, particularly in very steep terrain or couloirs with a fall hazard below. Plan your day in anticipation of increasing danger in the afternoon or during rapidly warming periods due to sunshine or thin clouds. Frank CarusForecaster

    A light refreeze overnight hardened the surface of the snowpack which has settled and warmed for the past several days. Refrozen snow surfaces will soften today with sluffs becoming possible as temperatures warm. Periods of thinner clouds or sunshine may accelerate warming on sunny aspects and may lead to natural point releases in warm areas such as around cliff bands or wind-sheltered cirques. These sluffs could push a skier or rider somewhere they do not want to go such as a creekbed or off a cliff.

Avalanche Discussion

Near 9,000ft overnight lows will dip below freezing but not much. Lower elevations will have a shorter freeze. Some areas in the Southwest Trails/Grey River region will not likely see below freezing temperatures for very long if at all. Wind will remain out of the southwest with speeds in the mid-teens. Partly cloudy skies tomorrow will allow the sun to peek through and continue to warm things up. Expect wet snow conditions earlier in the day as the freeze overnight will be short. Combined with warm air temperatures, the surface snow will progressively destabilize throughout the day. Timing is critical so adjust travel plans accordingly. Loose wet avalanches will be possible on steep slopes on the southerly half at all elevations. Below 7,500ft, this problem will exist on all aspects. The avalanche danger will elevate to Moderate throughout the day as temperatures warm.
