Highlights

Areas of unstable snow exist. These instabilities are due to buried weak layers of faceted snow. These weaknesses are comprised of buried surface hoar layers in areas with a deeper snowpack and poor snowpack structure, associated with faceted snow crystals, in areas where the snowpack is shallower. At the mid and upper elevations large slab avalanches could be triggered by humans on steep avalanche prone slopes. Avalanches are unlikely below an elevation of 7,500 feet. Evaluate snow and terrain carefully. The best way to manage the hazard associated with persistent weak layers is by making conservative terrain choices.

    At the mid and upper elevations large persistent slab avalanches could be triggered on buried layers of surface hoar. These slabs could be up to three feet deep. Although the potential for the weight of a single person to trigger one of these slabs is slowly decreasing, trying to determine which slopes are stable and which are not remains problematic due to variability in the distribution and strength of these buried weak layers. These slabs may become more sensitive to human triggers during the warmest portion of the day.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )The weather will remain mainly dry through Friday. Temperature inversions will weaken. Afternoon highs will rise into the upper 20s and low 30s. Winds will be light at 15 miles per hour and back from the west to the southwest.Backcountry users can still trigger large slab avalanches on persistent weak layers of faceted snow. These slabs could be up to four feet deep at the mid and upper elevations where the general avalanche hazard is forecast to be moderate. Avalanches are unlikely below an elevation of 7,500 feet where the general avalanche hazard is forecast to be low.
