Highlights

Sunshine and warmer temperatures will be increasing the hazard in steep terrain at the higher elevations. Wet loose slides are possible on steep sunlit slopes. Slab avalanches will become more sensitive to human triggers as the day warms. Monitor conditions and be prepared to move to cooler aspects and off of and out from under steep terrain during the warmest portions of the day. Avalanches are unlikely at the lower elevations.

    At the upper elevations and on isolated terrain features at the mid elevations slab avalanches could be triggered by skiers or riders in steep avalanche prone terrain. These slabs could be up to two feet deep. Sunshine and warm temperatures are expected to increase the sensitivity of these slabs to human triggers.

    Wet loose slides are possible on steep sunlit aspects during the warmer portion of the day. In the higher peaks these slides could release from above and run into the mid elevations.

Avalanche Discussion

A pulse of moisture in the northwest flow will move into the region. Snowfall will develop by dawn and continue through the day. Accumulations of 3 to 6 inches are possible at the higher elevations. Temperatures will be in the teens and 20s in the mountains and rise into the 30s and 40s in the valleys. Winds will be from the west-northwest at 10 to 20 miles per hour with higher gusts.The general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE at the higher elevations and LOW at the lower elevations. At the higher elevations pockets of soft slab up to two feet in depth could be triggered by skiers and riders on steep avalanche prone slopes. Avalanches are unlikely at the lower elevations.
