Avalanche danger
Highlights
The triggering of an avalanche is unlikely today in most mountain terrain. Low danger does not mean no danger exists. Small slides that could carry severe consequences can almost always be triggered in extreme terrain and/or being very close to cliffs. Small wet slides will become possible today in very steep terrain impacted by warm inversion temperatures and direct sunlight.

The snowpack is mostly stable in the Teton forecast area. Recent wind slabs have stabilized although an isolated pocket of slab could be found in unforgiving terrain. When assessing a route through terrain, evaluate the consequences of a fall if a small pocket were to release. Also consider the snow hardness at or near the surface in high consequence terrain as wind and sun crusts can be slick and fast.
The inversion conditions, with upper mountain temperatures starting in the mid-twenties, will likely produce small wet loose avalanche activity. This activity is most likely to occur in very steep terrain at the mid and upper elevations that face southeast to west. Although activity is expected to be loose, smal, and not widespread enough to warrant an increase in rating, continue to monitor conditions in the field. This hazard is avoidable by staying out of south facing terrain this afternoon that seems particularly warm and where snow surfaces have warmed to the point of being wet.
This is a period to monitor snow surfaces for future avalanche problems. Note areas where wind crusts are smooth and hard, where melt-freeze crusts are forming and where surface facets are rapidly developing. The latter is occurring in cold shaded areas which is also the desirable terrain that has loose settled powder snow.
