Avalanche Activity

The weather will be sunny. The danger of moist and wet avalanches will increase during the day.

On sunny slopes and at low and intermediate altitudes medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large moist and wet avalanches are possible as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation. In particular below approximately 2500 m moist avalanches can penetrate even deep layers and reach quite a large size. High altitudes and the high Alpine regions: The weather conditions fostered a substantial stabilisation of the snow drift accumulations. Mostly the avalanches in these loacations are medium-sized and can mostly still be released by large loads. Caution is to be exercised in particular on very steep slopes, and adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. Backcountry tours should be started and concluded early.

Snowpack Structure

In the vicinity of peaks snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. The weather conditions will facilitate a substantial strengthening of the near-surface layers during the night. Towards its surface, the snowpack is largely stable and its surface has a melt-freeze crust that is strong in many cases. In steep terrain there is a danger of falling on the hard snow surface. The spring-like weather conditions in the late morning will give rise to rapid moistening of the snowpack in particular on sunny slopes below approximately 2500 m. The surface of the snowpack will soften during the day. Especially steep shady slopes high altitudes and the high Alpine regions: In some places various wind slab layers are lying on old snow containing large grains.
