Highlights

Where the snowpack has refrozen overnight, or where cloud cover limits warming, the snow surface is hard and supportive and conditions are generally stable, but with increased risk of slipping.

Without an overnight freeze, or when the sun breaks through, the snow surface softens quickly and avalanche danger increases, especially in steep sun exposed slopes. Large wet slab avalanches are possible in these situations.

High in the mountains, skiers may still trigger persistent weak layers of faceted snow where the wind‑deposited snow remains dry.

Avalanche Activity

Without an overnight freeze, or when the sun breaks through, the snow surface softens quickly and avalanche danger increases, especially in steep sun exposed slopes. Large wet slab avalanches are possible in these situations. High in the mountains, skiers may still trigger persistent weak layers of faceted snow where the wind‑deposited snow remains dry.

Skredfaren varierer med nattefrost og solinnstråling. Der snødekket har hatt nattlig gjenfrysing, eller der overskyet vær hindrer oppvarming, er snøoverflaten hard og bærende og forholdene stabile. Dette gir lav skredfare, men økt utglidningsfare.

Når nattefrosten uteblir, eller solen får tak, mykner snøoverflaten raskt og skredfaren øker i bratte solvendte heng. Under slike forhold kan også større våte flakskred forekomme.

I høyden kan skiløpere fortsatt påvirke tørre vedvarende svake lag.

Snowpack Structure

Snødekket har gjennomgått flere smelte‑/frysesykluser de siste dagene. Der det har vært nattefrost er det hard skare om morgenen, men sol og varme fører til raskt oppmykning av snøoverflaten i solvendte heng. I nordvendte skyggesider og i høyden finnes fortsatt tørr fokksnø. Over ca. 800 moh finnes det kantkornlag, både nedføyket og ved eldre skare fra midten av januar. Hvor aktiv disse lagene er for tiden er usikker. Sammen med skarelag kan disse lagene samle vann og gi forutsetninger for våte flakskred.

Tendency

Avalanche danger is governed by overnight refreezing and solar radiation. Refrozen or shaded snow remains stable but slippery. Without refreezing or with sun, the snow softens quickly and avalanche danger increases, especially in steep south-facing terrain.

At higher elevations, there are persistent weak layers of faceted crystals that can be triggered by a skier when mild temperatures and solar radiation soften the overlying slabs.
