Regions

Kispiox, Microwave-Sinclair, Ningunsaw, North Bulkley, South Bulkley, Telkwa.

Lingering reactivity in wind slabs remains a concern.

Use caution around ridgelines, mid slope rollovers, and cross loaded terrain features.

Confidence

High

  • Confidence is due to a stable weather pattern with little change expected.
  • Uncertainty is due to the speed, direction, or duration of the wind and its effect on the snowpack.

Avalanche Summary

On Saturday, size 1.5 loose dry avalanches were reported from steep alpine terrain features. Several large wind slabs have been observed over the last week, on northeast, east, and south facing slopes. These avalanches failed on a layer of facets beneath recent snow.

Snowpack Summary

5 to 15 cm of recent snow overlies heavily wind affected snow in exposed areas. A layer of sugary facets is buried around 50 cm deep and is slowly gaining strength. Below 1300 m, a near-surface crust is present.

The mid and lower snowpack have no layers of concern. Snowpack depths are generally around 150-200 cm deep at treeline.

Weather Summary

Sunday Night
Mostly clear skies. 20 km/h west ridgetop wind. Treeline temperature -13 °C.

Monday
Mostly cloudy. 1 to 5 cm of snow. 30-60 km/h southwest ridgetop wind. Treeline temperature -11 °C.

Tuesday
Mostly cloudy. 5 to 15 cm of snow. 30-50 km/h southwest ridgetop wind. Treeline temperature -7 °C.

Wednesday
Mix of sun and clouds. 3 to 5 cm of snow. 40 km/h southwest ridgetop wind. Treeline temperature -7 °C.

More details can be found in the Mountain Weather Forecast.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Be alert to conditions that change with elevation, aspect, and exposure to wind.
  • Avoid slopes that sound hollow or drum-like.
  • Make observations and continually assess conditions as you travel.

Problems

Wind Slabs

Wind Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer of snow (a slab) formed by the wind. Wind typically transports snow from the upwind sides of terrain features and deposits snow on the downwind side. Wind slabs are often smooth and rounded and sometimes sound hollow, and can range from soft to hard. Wind slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
