Highlights

The general avalanche hazard is MODERATE above 9,000 feet and LOW below that elevation. Areas of unstable snow persist and could be human triggered on steep northerly aspects in isolated areas at the upper elevations. New snow that fell since yesterday morning lies upon surface hoar that grew upon crusts on south facing slopes and areas of wind packed snow and settled powder snow on exposed and shaded aspects. Loose snow avalanches involving this new snow could be human triggered on steep slopes on a variety of aspects.

    Skiers and riders venturing onto steep, north facing slopes above 9,000 feet could trigger hard slab avalanches with crown depths to three feet. Suspect locations are steep, rocky slopes where faceted snow persists at the base of the snowpack.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )As this trough moves east the flow is backing towards the northwest and colder air is moving into the region. Skies will be cloudy overnight and the mountains will get a few more inches of snow. On Sunday skies will be mostly cloudy with a chance for a couple inches of additional snowfall. Snowfall will be heaviest over the Wyoming and the Salt River Ranges and along the east side of the Continental Divide as this system moves into the central and eastern portions of the state. Temperatures on Sunday will be in the teens and 20s. Winds will be light from the northwest at around 10 miles per hour.The general avalanche hazard is expected to be LOW in the Teton and Greys River areas and MODERATE in the Togwotee Pass area. New snow will lie upon slick old snow surfaces and could be triggered by skiers on riders on steep slopes. These shallow loose snow slides could entrain sizable volumes of debris on long sustained pitches. In isolated areas persistent hard slabs could be human triggered on steep northerly aspects above an elevation of 9,000 feet with depths to three feet.
