Avalanche Summary

You could trigger an avalanche where you find recently wind-drifted snow over old, weak snow. You are most likely to find this at high elevations close to ridgelines and in gullies on north, northeast, and east-facing slopes. If you're seeing cracking in firm drifts of snow or hearing audible collapses, avoid steep drifted slopes. Look for sheltered slopes with unconsolidated snow as a safer option.
