Although unlikely, you may be able to trigger a small avalanche where you find hard, wind-drifted snow above older, weak snow. The most problematic areas are on the lee side of ridges, sides of gullies or couloirs, or around rocky outcroppings on north through east-facing slopes. Consider the consequences of a small avalanche, as they can be dangerous when combined with terrain traps such as cliffs, rocks, gullies, or dense trees below steep slopes.
