Overnight, 2-4" of snow fell in this zone. In advance of this snowfall, wind speeds picked up for the first time in a week. On sunny aspects, the 6-12" of snow from last weekend's storm was locked in place by crusts, but shaded aspects were still holding a fair bit of unconsolidated snow. As the wind speed increased yesterday it was finding this unconsolidated snow and easily moving it around (video here).
Cold and clear weather last week left a mix of facets and crusts that new slabs will have trouble bonding to. Because of this, freshly formed slabs are likely to be touchy today. I'd expect these slabs to be most reactive where a layer of facets is sitting on top of a stiffer surface underneath. After last weekend's storm, I spotted a few avalanches that failed in terrain where this combination existed, like the one pictured here. While the most recent wind slabs will be smaller than the ones I saw last week, encountering one of them in very steep, rocky terrain could have high consequences.

ADDITIONAL DISCUSSIONCold temperatures, winds, and passing clouds should keep the wet loose avalanche problem at bay today. However, it's almost March and the intensity of solar radiation is increasing by the day. If the clouds disappear for long, pay attention to the character of the snow surface. If it is starting to get wet, be alert to the possibility of these types of slides. Any slides will be small, due to the lack of significant new snow, but they may travel downslope quickly on the crusts that formed last week. If any of these slides happen today, it will be in very steep, rocky terrain that directly faces the sun.
