Highlights

Heightened avalanche conditions exist today in steep terrain where there a persistent layer of weak snow can be found near the ground. It remains possible for the weight of a skier or rider to trigger a deep slab avalanche, possibly from a distance or from below, in places where this layer exists. While triggering this type of avalanche is trending towards unlikely, the consequences of being caught would be dire. Evaluate terrain carefully and dig to identify the presence of this weak layer before committing to steep terrain. Tracks on a slope are not an indication that the slope is stable and free of this weak layer. At lower elevations and sunny aspects at mid-elevations, recent warm temperatures, wet snow or rain have created a crust that has stabilized the snow.

    Slab depths over the December 5th interface of weak faceted snow and crusts vary from 3 to 8 feet depending on aspect and elevation. A hard slab has formed in many locations over this layer. The most recent avalanche activity on this layer is a reminder that it may remain reactive to human triggers. When dealing with persistent weak layers that are buried several feet deep, warning signs such as cracking and collapsing will probably NOT be encountered and previous tracks do NOT indicate stability.

Avalanche Discussion

A very weak disturbance may provide a few flurries in the mountains overnight although accumulations will be negligible. Wednesday looks to be mostly clear with morning temperature inversions similar to the last two days. Highs are to reach the mid-twenties at all elevations. The general avalanche danger will remain Moderate above 8500 feet on Wednesday (and for the foreseeable future). In the Teton and Togwotee pass areas, deep hard slabs have progressed to the point of being stubborn and less likely to trigger. They still demand respect because if triggered they will be large to very large and are likely to carry severe consequences to anyone involved. As the slabs have become harder to trigger, they still remain susceptible to larger loads such as groups or snow machines although the slight chance continues for a single person to trigger their release when a particularly thin and weak spot on a steep slope is impacted. These slabs could have depths of three to eight feet in these areas. In the Togwotee Pass area, the danger is similar although avalanche events will be easier to initiate and smaller with depths of two to five feet. Avalanches below 8500 feet will be unlikely.
