Cold conditions and firm snow surfaces will make for fast travel in the alpine this weekend. The high pressure will soon start to give way as some new weather starts to trickle in early in the week.
Saturday Night: Scattered cloud, light wind from the southeast, alpine low -8 C.
Sunday: Cloudy with sunny periods, moderate wind from the southwest, alpine high -4 C.
Monday: Mix of sun and cloud, wind increasing to strong from the southwest, alpine high -2 C. Freezing level 800 m.
Tuesday: Cloudy with flurries accumulating to 10 cm, strong wind from the southwest, alpine high -1 C. Freezing level 1000 m.
We haven't received any reports of recent avalanche activity but field observations are very limited right now. If you see anything (or if you don't) while out in the field, please consider sharing that information with us and fellow recreationists via the Mountain Information Network (MIN).
Recent reports, including a MIN post from Friday, describe scoured northerly aspects and firm wind pressed snow of variable depths over a hard rain crust in the alpine. Variable snow coverage ranging from 30 to 150 cm have been observed in the alpine, tapering quickly with elevation, with no snow below 1600m.
