Wind slab avalanches may be found at upper elevations on lee slopes with wind drifted snow. Steer around wind-loaded start zones and evaluate the bond between storm snow and old snow. At low elevations, difficult travel conditions are the biggest concern.
Strong winds accompanied rain and mixed precipitation that extended to near treeline on Wednesday. As temperatures continue to cool Wednesday afternoon, the snowpack at low and middle elevations should freeze. Difficult travel conditions and exposed or shallowly buried ground hazards, like rocks, stumps will likely be the biggest concerns.
Wind slabs are most likely to be found at higher elevations with thicker slabs closer to the Cascade crest and on wind loaded lee slopes. Avoid slopes steeper than 35 degrees with freshly drifted snow. Evaluate the bond between new snow and old wet snow.
