Avalanche Activity

Weak layers in the old snowpack are treacherous. The danger of moist and wet avalanches will increase a little during the day.

The surface of the snowpack will soften quickly. Even single winter sport participants can release avalanches. In particular on very steep north, northeast and east facing slopes the avalanches can be released in the weakly bonded old snow and reach medium size in isolated cases, caution is to be exercised in particular in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain, and at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack. Remotely triggered avalanches are possible in isolated cases. As a consequence of warming during the day there will be a gradual increase in the danger of moist and wet avalanches. Some small and, in isolated cases, medium-sized natural avalanches are possible.

Snowpack Structure

Outgoing longwave radiation during the night will be good in some case. The surface of the snowpack will freeze to form a strong crust and will soften quickly. Sunshine and high temperatures gave rise to moistening of the snowpack in all aspects below approximately 2400 m. The old snowpack remains weakly bonded on shady slopes. In addition the sometimes deep wind slabs are capable of being triggered now as before.
