Avalanche Activity

The somewhat older wind slabs must be evaluated with care and prudence. The surface of the snowpack will soften later than the day before. In steep terrain there is a danger of falling on the icy crust.

The wind slabs must be evaluated with care and prudence in particular on northwest to north to southeast facing aspects above approximately 2200 m. The sometimes avalanche-prone wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in some cases in all aspects. Individual avalanche prone locations are to be found especially on steep shady slopes at elevated altitudes and adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. In particular in extremely steep terrain and at the base of rock walls and behind abrupt changes in the terrain individual mostly small natural moist avalanches are possible.

Snowpack Structure

The wind slabs of the last few days are to be evaluated with care and prudence above the tree line. In some places wind slabs are lying on the smooth surface of an old snowpack. The mostly small wind slabs are clearly recognisable to the trained eye. Adjacent to ridgelines a sometimes treacherous avalanche situation will prevail. The surface of the snowpack will freeze to form a strong crust and will soften during the day. In addition the danger of moist avalanches will increase as the day progresses.
