Avalanche Activity

Slight increase in danger of dry avalanches as a consequence of the new snow.

The fresh snow and the mostly small wind slabs that are forming in particular above approximately 2200 m represent the main danger. The prevalence of the avalanche prone locations will increase in the afternoon. In the regions where more snow falls danger level 2 (moderate) may be reached in the afternoon. The Avalanche Warning Service currently has only a small amount of information.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area 25 to 40 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall above approximately 800 m. This snow is very loosely bonded above approximately 2000 m. As a consequence of snowfall and the strong southerly wind, snow drift accumulations will form in the course of the day. In some places new snow and wind slabs are lying on the soft surface of an old snowpack. Towards its base, the snowpack is faceted. This applies in particular on shady slopes in particular above approximately 2500 m.

Gradual increase in avalanche danger as a consequence of the precipitation.
