Avalanche Activity

The wind slabs represent the main danger.

The new snow of Saturday will be deposited on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack. As a consequence of new snow and a moderate to strong southeasterly wind, wind slabs will form in the afternoon in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas as well as above approximately 2200 m. In the afternoon in some localities danger level 3 (considerable) will be reached. The new snow and wind slabs can be released naturally. In addition in the afternoon in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas, small and medium-sized dry avalanches are possible. Fresh wind slabs must be evaluated with care and prudence. In particular at intermediate and high altitudes the prevalence and size of the avalanche prone locations will increase. They can be released by a single winter sport participant. These places are barely recognisable because of the poor visibility. The current avalanche situation calls for experience in the assessment of avalanche danger.

Snowpack Structure

20 to 40 cm of snow will fall until Saturday above approximately 1500 m. The new snow of Saturday is bonding poorly with the old snowpack in some places. Caution is to be exercised on wind-protected shady slopes. Towards its surface, the snowpack is unfavourably layered and its surface consists of surface hoar. As a consequence of solar radiation a crust formed on the surface during the last few days, in particular on sunny slopes. A lot of snow is lying at intermediate and high altitudes.
