Generally safe avalanche conditions are expected on all aspects and elevations. Variable surface conditions and low coverage pose the greatest hazards for backcountry travel today. 

After nearly 2 weeks of high pressure, the storm door appears to be opening tonight. This storm will be the first in a series of winter storms. It is expected to be small, and will favor Mammoth and areas to the north, as well as the Sierra Crest. As the storm comes in tonight, we will see temperatures drop and winds continue to  increase out of the SW. Snow totals may be anywhere from 1" to 8". 

If traveling in the backcountry today, pay special attention to the surfaces you encounter. Breakable crusts, firm, slick surfaces, and shallow coverage dominate the forecast area. While this may make for challenging travel conditions today, expect avalanche hazard to rise as we see snow fall on top of various snow surfaces in the coming days. Loose facets and crust/facet combos may become unstable weak layers as a slab of new snow is built on top. Knowing where these conditions exist before the snow falls will help you set yourself up for success if you're looking to travel in the backcountry during/post storm.
