Most avalanches will be very small and of little risk. However, on shaded aspects, a spring transition of the upper snowpack could make it easier to trigger an avalanche that could injure you. Snow and ice will continue to shed from rocks/cliffs while cornices may fail without warning until the snowpack gets a solid overnight refreeze.

Since mid-day 3/21, temperatures have primarily remained above freezing except for a period of time early Thursday and a short duration Friday night. Periods of clear nights helped snow surfaces refreeze last week, creating a freeze-thaw cycle that added some strength to the upper snowpack. Cloudy and even milder weather over the weekend resulted in poor overnight refreezes, saturated snow, and deep boot penetration. The upper snowpack has mostly transitioned to a summer-like state, but you might find some areas that are still transitioning on N and E aspects where ONP rangers found layers of dry snow sandwiched between surface crusts on 3/24. These layers may be less transitioned at higher elevations. 

Hurricane Ridge may or may not get a decent refreeze at upper elevations on Sunday night, but expect a third night of poor refreeze at lower elevations. If you encounter areas where the snow still feels sticky, you can trigger an avalanche that may be consequential and entrain snow. In areas where the snow feels firm or more consolidated, your risk is minimal. Monitor the slopes above you for any overhanging hazard. Cornices are soft, sagging, and prone to failure without warning. Snow and ice on rocks and cliffs will also shed without warning and could trigger a small avalanche if the snow is still transitioning on the slopes below.

Saturated snow conditions may be poor for riding and very difficult for booting. Also, be prepared to navigate spring-related travel hazards like open creeks, rocks and trees.

2021-22 Forecast Schedule: Avalanche danger ratings will be issued for the Olympics every Friday through Sunday and during mid-week holidays. During the week when the Hurricane Ridge road is closed, forecast information will be updated daily to include expected conditions and relevant travel advice under the No Rating label.
