Highlights

Triggering an avalanche is unlikely today. Isolated areas of unstable snow might exist in very steep, wind loaded terrain. Deeply buried weak layers are an unlikely threat. Give yourself a safety margin around very steep and consequential terrain by traveling one at a time, keeping track of your partners and avoiding terrain traps.

    Weak snow from November is buried two to five feet deep. The likelihood of impacting this weak snow is very low, but not completely out of the question in isolated areas. Terrain that is most suspect will be on the north half of the compass. Evaluate very steep slopes that have wind affected snow, convexities, and/or rocky outcrops. Any combination of these characteristics often harbors shallower snow and increases the likelihood of impacting weak layers buried near the ground.  Avalanches involving weak layers at the base of the snowpack could be very large.

Avalanche Discussion

Here are two considerations as you are out riding on Togwotee Pass today:

  • Small, stubborn wind slabs from snow and wind over the weekend could catch you off guard. The likelihood of this problem is low, and avalanches will be small, but the consequences of getting knocked off your feet or sled above dangerous slopes could be high. Evaluate snow surfaces near ridges and other wind exposed areas for stiff drifts and cracking.
  • Togwotee has a history of large avalanche events that sometimes surprise us. The East face of Lava comes to mind. (Here is a reminder of what that looked like last year.) Weak snow buried at the base of the snowpack persists for much of the season on Togwotee. Over two weeks without loading has allowed the snowpack to adjust and stabilize. This time without loading, combined with a stiff overlying slab is making it very unlikely that you will impact these weak layers near the ground and cause an avalanche. That said, an unlucky trigger in just the right (shallow) spot could trigger a large avalanche. To reiterate the bottom line - increase your margin in consequential terrain by travelling one at a time, watching your partners, and avoiding terrain traps.
