Highlights

Avalanches are not expected this morning as the snowpack has become generally stable. Direct sunlight and warming temperatures will weaken the snow surface and provide the possibility for backcountry riders and skiers to trigger soft slabs and possibly wet slabs with depths to two feet in very steep terrain, particularly in and around cliff areas above 8000 feet. Rising temperatures will also increase the likelihood of cornice failure, which in turn could trigger a large to very large persistent deep slab avalanche. Below 8000 feet, avalanche activity is unlikely except for wet loose slides and sun-balling. Be sure to consider variables such as aspect relative to time of day and avoid exposure to large cornices for safe backcountry travel.

Conditions will remain dry and skies will be mostly clear. Temperatures will fall into the teens tonight and rise into the 30s and 40s on Tuesday. Winds will continue to be light and variable.Warm temperatures and sunshine will increase the general hazard is all areas tomorrow. Wet slides are possible on steep slopes. In the Togwotee Pass and Greys River areas the general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE. Deep persistent slab avalanches are still a potential problem. Large hard slabs up to five feet in depth could be triggered by snowmobilers who climb steep avalanche prone slopes. In the Teton area the general avalanche hazard is expected to LOW in the morning hours and increase to MODERATE after snow surfaces begin to soften.Large cornices exist in all areas and could become unstable. Cornice failures could trigger large deep slab avalanches. Isolated pockets of surface slab up to two feet deep also exist and could be human triggered in steep avalanche starting zones, steep chutes and cliff areas.
