Highlights

Dangerous avalanche conditions exist on upper elevation slopes. It will be likely to trigger avalanches large enough to catch and carry skiers and riders today. These avalanches could be triggered remotely. Being caught in an avalanche could result in significant injury, as rocks, ground and vegetation are lurking at or below the surface of the snow.

    New snow that fell over the last 72 hours has fallen on weak faceted snow in the upper elevations. This snow proved to be poorly bonded yesterday, with widespread collapsing and cracking reported. Numerous avalanches 1-2 feet deep, both natural and human triggered, were reported on slopes mainly above 8,500 on the north half of the compass yesterday. Expect sensitivity of these slabs to be on a gradual decreasing trend today, but still falling in the ‘likely’ range. Avoid steep upper elevation and shaded mid elevation terrain.  Be aware of the continued potential for remote triggering.

    Recent storm slabs have been generally upside down as a result of warming temperatures and dense snow. Moderate winds have formed slabs 1-2 feet thick in the upper elevations. These slabs will remain sensitive to the weight of a single person or group. This problem overlaps with the persistent slab issue, in that you will be most likely to encounter wind slabs in the upper elevations on slopes that may also have old weak snow near the ground. Avoid terrain showing signs of recent wind loading.

Avalanche Discussion

An unusually slow start to winter has created snowpack issues that are isolated to specific terrain. Prior to this most recent storm, snow on the ground was confined mainly to the upper elevations. Some snow in the middle elevations could be found in north facing terrain but is likely patchy in its distribution. Bare ground was prevalent in the lower elevations and on solar aspects in the mid elevations. As a result, we are left with a persistent slab problem that is relatively easy to identify based on elevation and aspect.

New snow that fell over the last 72 hours followed a warming temperature trend yesterday. While this made for upside riding conditions, it has helped to consolidate the new snow. This is good news in terrain that lacked old snow prior to loading. In terrain harboring old snow, the situation warrants caution, as much of that old snow is weak, faceted and requiring more time to adjust to the new load.
