Weak layers of snow remain just that, weak. A crown profile yesterday on a previously unreported avalanche on Calvert's Ridge north of the Pass revealed clean and energetic crack propagation. This avalanche had a skiff of new snow on it which indicates that the slide occured after the loading of 12/8-9. Stability test results were fairly stubborn (ECTP20 and 22, down 2') on this crown but were eerily similar to results in test pits over a week ago. Stabilty tests around the Tetons are similar and indicate that this weak layer remains in play despite improved stability overall. Additional load won't help today, whether that load is a bit of weight from new snow or you.

Nine days ago was the last reported avalanche which was a very large slide triggered from a thousand feet away in the southern Tetons. Widespread collapsing was reported around that time as well. Since then, obvious signs of instability such avalanches, collapsing and cracking slopes have diminished significantly.
