New and existing snow will be transported by moderate to strong winds and build new slabs below ridgelines and along steep terrain features. These slabs will grow in size and sensitivity as snowfall increases. Because wind slabs will be building on a lot of the same aspects that have buried weak layers, a small avalanche has the potential to step down and fail deeper in the snowpack. Cracking that shoots in front of your skis or boards, or feeling a density change from soft snow to firmer hollow-feeling snow, are indicators that you have found an area where the wind has stiffened the surface into a denser cohesive slab. If you encounter these warning signs, retreat to lower-angle terrain that has a wide margin around steep slopes.
A textured surface, shooting cracks, and a transition from soft snow to denser snow are all clues that the wind has stiffened the new snow into cohesive slabs.
