Snow over the last 8 days totaled about 1.6-1.95" of SWE, a significant amount of stress on our various weak layers of facets and depth hoar. The winds were extremely active for most of that period, allowing many of the slabs to get even thicker (up to 3 feet deep), heavier, and more cohesive/reactive. The most likely weak layer these avalanches will fail on formed during the February dry period before Valentines Day. With our shallow and weak snowpack, it's possible for any avalanche failing higher up in the snowpack to step down and gouge into weak layers close to the ground, which could lead to some of the largest avalanches we've seen all season.
Cracking and collapsing are obvious indicators that you've found this unstable snowpack setup. Loose snow sluffing will be elevated today, and these sluffs can also behave as excellent triggers for larger persistent slab avalanches, so be heads up today and distance yourself from large slopes greater than 35 degrees.
