You'll primarily be dealing with old snow interfaces and stubborn slabs to start the day. Expect building hazard at all elevations as the storm ramps up and builds the slab hazards driving this forecast. Snow will fall to around 2000 ft, and will stack up more rapidly on the eastern side of the mountain. Although ridgeline SE winds aren't impressive by Mt Hood standards, they're likely to be strong enough to transport snow onto atypical aspects at all elevations. Hazard will develop first at middle and upper elevations below freshly formed cornices in start zones. By the end of the day, slabs 6" or deeper could exist down to mid-slope features on middle and upper elevation slopes. We're pretty sure there will be slabs you can trigger, but we're not sure whether the problem will become widespread. Heavy snowfall rates, intense wind loading, shooting cracks, whumps, or fresh slab activity are all signs to dial it back. Within the cold, low-density snow, firmer over weaker snow layering could be more subtle than you expect, but still be reactive. When in doubt, seek wind-scoured slopes and sheltered terrain less than 35 degrees.
If snow totals end up in the 6-8" range, storm slabs could develop by the end of the day. Simple test slopes will help you evaluate reactivity within the storm snow. We expect most slabs (wind or storm) will involve the new interface (a mix of crust, firm snow, and perhaps spotty surface hoar on shaded aspects). However, it's also worth evaluating the 2/11 and early February crust given the potential for wind slabs to step down to these layers at upper elevation, producing a large avalanche.
