Avalanche Activity

Ski touring and other off-piste activities, including snowshoe hiking, call for caution and restraint.

As a consequence of wind from westerly directions, sometimes avalanche prone wind slabs formed. Fresh and somewhat older wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in particular on very steep shady slopes. The avalanche prone locations are barely recognisable, even to the trained eye. As a consequence of warming during the day moist and wet avalanches are possible as the day progresses. This applies in particular on very steep slopes below approximately 2900 m. Medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large natural avalanches are still not entirely ruled out. In particular on shady slopes the avalanches can penetrate even deep layers.

Snowpack Structure

50 to 80 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, fell in the last seven days above approximately 2000 m. Here rain fell up to 2100 m. The sometimes strong wind has transported the new snow. 5 to 10 cm of snow fell on Wednesday. In some places new snow and wind slabs are lying on soft layers. The upper section of the snowpack is unfavourably layered. Several medium-sized and large dry and wet avalanches have been released on Tuesday.

Tendency

As a consequence of warming during the day and the solar radiation, the likelihood of moist and wet avalanches being released will increase significantly in all altitude zones. Until Monday the weather will be very mild. On Saturday it will be very warm.
