Highlights

Some fresh snow and the wind slabs will be deposited on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack in particular on northwest to north to northwest facing aspects above approximately 2800 m. Weak layers in the old snowpack necessitate defensive route selection. Shady slopes where weaknesses exist in the old snowpack are especially precarious.

Avalanche Activity

Some fresh snow and the wind slabs will be deposited on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack in particular on northwest to north to northwest facing aspects above approximately 2800 m. Weak layers in the old snowpack necessitate defensive route selection. Shady slopes where weaknesses exist in the old snowpack are especially precarious.

Some fresh snow and the wind slabs that are forming in all aspects are bonding poorly with the old snowpack. Weak layers in the old snowpack can be released by large additional loads in particular above approximately 2400 m. This applies in particular in shady places that are protected from the wind. Avalanches can penetrate down to the ground and reach large size in isolated cases. The old snowpack will be unstable in the north.

Snowpack Structure

At elevated altitudes a treacherous avalanche situation will be encountered in some localities. The new snow and wind slabs are bonding poorly with the old snowpack. Towards its base, the snowpack is faceted. Avalanches can be released in deeper layers, in particular by large additional loads.
