Highlights

The avalanche danger will rise to Moderate as the day warms. Wet snow avalanches are possible on very steep sunny slopes. Move to shadier slopes if you find slushy snow. Get an early start and minimize time under very steep, sunny slopes as you exit the mountains this afternoon.

    It will be possible to trigger wet loose avalanches today. Warm temperatures and sunshine will destabilize snow surfaces, beginning on very steep east-facing slopes and then moving to the south and west. These avalanches will most likely be small but could still easily knock you off your feet. Natural wet loose avalanche activity is less likely but minimize time under very steep, rocky slopes above you that are warming in the sun. If you step out of your skis into ankle deep slush, it’s time to move to shadier slopes.

    Cornices are big this time of year. Many cornices have started cracking and can still break unexpectedly. Remember that they crack much further back than you expect - something to keep in mind as you climb ridges. Minimize the time spent on slopes beneath cornices.

    Wet loose avalanche activity in the steep/rocky south facing terrain of Avalanche Canyon. We watched this avalanche occur around noon today. Maybe pushing the limits of a D1 avalanche. It would have certainly knocked you off your feet.

    Isolated wind slabs up to a foot thick exist on lee aspects at upper elevations. Moderate to strong southwest winds over the past few days have redistributed any available loose snow. While unlikely to trigger a wind slab avalanche, don’t get caught off guard around very steep wind-loaded slopes, cliffs, or cross-loaded terrain features like couloirs. These slabs may or may not show signs of cracking before being triggered.
