Generally safe avalanche conditions exist across the forecast area today.  Monitor for changing conditions. Isolated and thin wind slabs may develop in leeward catchment zones near and above treeline, particularly if snow accumulations outperform the forecast.

A late winter storm pushes through the region this morning bringing much cooler temperatures, extreme winds, and light snow showers. Significant avalanche activity remains unlikely today. Small and isolated wind slabs could develop in leeward catchment zones near and above treeline, particularly in the northern part of the forecast area and along the Sierra crest. Be prepared for the size and distribution of fresh slabs to increase if we see snow accumulations outperform the forecast.

Cloudy skies and extreme winds will almost certainly keep surface warming in check today. Nevertheless, some surface softening is likely, particularly on solar slopes and in the southern part of the forecast area. Be prepared to retreat to more shaded aspects and lower-angle terrain if you notice that surface warming is reaching concerning levels.

Variable surface conditions and difficult access should remain top of mind for the backcountry enthusiast today. Hard and slick surfaces exist on all aspects and at all elevations. Tools like boot and/or ski crampons and an ice ax may be necessary equipment depending on where you wish to travel. In addition, keep in mind that parking may still be limited at trailheads and many access roads in the region sustained significant flood damage this winter. Factor in extra time to account for the potential of a long and arduous approach keep in mind that driving around closures can have negative impacts on the ecosystem.
